SHANI WOMACK MUSIC
Her voice is rich, warm, soulful, and soothing. Music came naturally to this songstress. She was known to entertain family and friends by belting out a Donna Summers tune into the vacuum handle. Shani has always loved to sing and perform for an audience. Born and raised in Flint, Michigan, the oldest of four children and the daughter of a Baptist preacher. At age 6, Shani began singing in the church choir and continued on with formal classical vocal training through college.
While in college, at Grambling State University, Shani helped to form the R&B singing group, “Harmonee”, with her childhood friend and neighbor, Miko Marks (Award winning Country/Soul Singer). They were soon joined by Erykah Badu (Award winning Neo-soul artist) to round out the trio. Together, they became one the most popular groups in the area, performing on campus, for local radio and TV programs, and as an opening act for concerts. After College, Shani went on to record with local choirs like the Shiloh MBC Choir and Gospel Music Workshop of America-Flint Chapter.
Over the years, Shani has nurtured a love for stories and storytelling.
She has become an engaging Storyteller, who loves to share her own family stories as well as Jamaican folktales and songs from her heritage. She is available for performances at libraries, schools, churches, and cultural events.
However, Shani is known best for her jazzy and soulful take on Gospel and for embracing Christian Neo-Soul. Her first solo project, "No Turning Back", was released on April 20, 2013. Her latest work is an 'ode to the City of Flint.
"To Flint With Love", is an open letter to Flint and to the world. It captures the frustration, the anger, the yearning, and the hope of Flint residents.
